Her mother was a famous gospel singer, her godmother was Aretha Franklin and her cousin was Dionne Warwick; Whitney Houston was never destined to be average – and she wasn’t. Her career spanned almost 3 decades, she sold 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide, she had 16 top ten singles in the UK and amassed 415 career awards.

Whitney’s career started early – whilst still a teenager she sang backing vocals for a number of artists and at the age of 15 she sang on Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman”:

Her debut album ‘Whitney Houston’ was released in 1985 and from that album she got her first UK number one single; ‘Saving All My Love For You’. That album bagged her 3 Grammy nominations and 1 award for ‘Saving All My Love For You’:

She followed that album up with ‘Whitney’ in 1987 and ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’ in 1990, those albums ended up selling a combined total of 32 million copies and featured singles ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ and ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’. In between releasing those albums Whitney also released the single for the 1988 Olympics; ‘One Moment In Time’:

1992 saw Whitney move into acting with the release of ‘The Bodyguard’, it was her first film role, starring alongside Kevin Costner. The movie was a huge box-office success, taking $16.6 million in it’s opening weekend. From that film also came Whitney’s most famous song; a cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’:

 

In 1998, having spent most of the last decade pursuing acting, Houston returned to release her fourth album ‘My Love Is Your Love’, the album won her a sixth Grammy and an Oscar for ‘When You Believe’ which featured on The Prince of Egypt soundtrack. From that album also came the massive single ‘It’s Not Right But It’s Okay’:

Her most recent album was released in 2009 and from it came the title single ‘I Look To You’ and the hit ‘Million Dollar Bill’:



With the incredible career she had, and her amazing voice; it's no wonder that the whole music world had a massive out pouring of emotions on the day the Whitney Houston passed away
